REGULAR CLEANING
Vacuum regularly this stops the grit and dust getting trapped in the carpet fibres which creates premature wear. Use the thin hose attachment on the vacuum around the skirting boards this is a big dust trap and a lot of modern homes get a discoloured carpet around the skirting board from builders dust drawing up through the gaps in the skirting which comes from behind the dry lined walls. This is only a personal view. Modern hand held vacuum cleaners although useful do not have as strong a suction compared to upright vacuum cleaners. I would always recommend the traditional vacuum for your cleaning. The hand held are great for a quick clean up but are not strong enough to get down into the pile and remove trapped grit and small particles. If you don’t have traditional vacuum every now and then use a brush to agitate the pile prior to vacuuming. Vacuuming the stairs can be difficult and as the foot traffic is always in the same spot the pile can flatten down quickly. This is partly caused by fluff and dust getting trapped in the fibres and matting together. If you use a hand brush to agitate the carpet pile it will help remove this.
STAINS
Stains can be difficult to remove if they are not cleaned straight away. There are several different fibres on the market so you need to be careful what cleaning products you use. I have added links to great cleaning tips.
POLYPROPYLENEis an oil based fibre and will not shed. If you can get a lose fibre when touched with a naked flame it will melt.
This is the family favourite easy to clean and hard wearing. This fibre will show signs of flattening quicker than wool or nylon but just never seems to actually wear out. Here is a link (you may need to copy and paste the link) to one of our favourite suppliers cleaning guide. ENSURE YOU TEST SOMEWHERE ON THE CARPET NOT VISIBLE BEFORE USING BLEACH BASED PRODUCTS.

NYLON
1. Scoop up any solids.
2. Blot up as much of the spilt liquid as possible, using a clean white absorbent towel or a wet vacuum cleaner.
3. Clean with water or a cleaning agent, but do not put a cleaning agent directly onto the carpet, but apply to a clean white towel.
4. Always work from the outer edges of the stain towards the centre to prevent spreading. Do not rub the pile.
5. Rinse with cool water and blot using an absorbent towel.
6. Avoid using the treated area until thoroughly dry.
Do not rub or scrub a nylon carpet as this will lead to permanent pile distortion
WOOL is probably the hardest wearing fibre and retains its looks longer than most man made carpet fibres. Can be easy to identify. If you rub your hand over the carpet firmly it will create fluff. If you burn the fibre it will give off a smell like burnt hair.
